A new £7 million housing development in the Essex village of Canewdon has welcomed its first residents.

Sanctuary Homes is putting the finishing touches to 35 affordable homes at its Three Acres scheme on Anchor Lane.

Comprising 21 two-bedroom, seven three-bedroom and three four-bedroom houses, as well as four apartments, the development is a significant addition to the local housing market.

Around half of the properties, part funded by Homes England, have enabled first-time buyers to take their first step on the housing ladder through Shared Ownership, while the rest have been made available for affordable rent.

Among the first residents to receive the keys to their new two-bedroom terrace are Elizabeth and Michael Rose, who are realising their dream of owning a home in the country.

Elizabeth said: “My husband and I have always wanted to live in a village, surrounded by the countryside, and this property gives us exactly what we are looking for.

“The benefit of moving to this property is not only the beautiful location but we also now have the room to start building our own little family.”

She continued: “If it wasn't for Shared Ownership we would either still be living with my parents or be forced to choose a rental property as it now takes so much longer to save for a decent deposit on a house.”

The properties at Three Acres have been designed in keeping with Canewdon’s historic architecture and form part of Sanctuary’s wider development programme.

Peter Martin, Sanctuary Group Director - Development, added: “Three Acres is a delightful new development which really complements the village and we have been thrilled by the interest shown in it by local people.

“Each of the homes has been reserved and very soon all of the residents will be settling into their new surroundings.”

Rochford District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community, Cllr Mike Webb, added: “Affordability is a key issue in the Rochford District, as a relatively high proportion of our residents are unable to afford their own homes. Based on the last quarter housing report, 57 per cent of first-time buyers living in the district are not able to afford to purchase a property in the area.

“We all know how tricky it can be to get onto that first rung of the housing ladder and these new properties, which have been made available for Shared Ownership via our partners Sanctuary, will provide a helping hand. I wish the first residents the best of luck in their new homes.”
