A much-loved community venue in Frating near Colchester has been given live-saving support and a new lease of life thanks to Sanctuary Homes and one of its construction partners.

Frating’s War Memorial Hall and Institute has received a donation of a defibrillator and refurbishment of its kitchen thanks to a partnership between Sanctuary Homes and its companion contractor Hill Construction.

Hill Construction are currently working on Sanctuary Homes new housing development called Penny Fields which is near to the village’s historic Memorial Hall and carried out the work after signing up to Sanctuary’s MORE! programme, which commits to connect with people in places where we are building new homes. Members of the Hill Construction team worked on renovating the kitchen and made the donation through Sanctuary Homes, allowing a new defibrillator to be located outside the hall for community use.

The hall, approaching its 100th anniversary is an important building locally for people in the community. It hosts the parish council as well giving local people a venue for social and recreational events as well as a host for the county council’s mobile library service.

Councillor Terry Cuthbert, Chairman of Frating Parish Council said: “The Hall committee express their gratitude for the work done to the Memorial hall which is approaching its 100th year in 2022.  The works will help us celebrate this centenary year, in a special event to re-dedicate the hall in memory of those who lost their lives in the First World War. We hope the defibrillator never has to be used, but now that we have this installed, it could be a life-saver.

Sanctuary’s MORE! programme pledges to work alongside local communities with Sanctuary’s development partners donating manpower, materials, or equipment to a variety of schemes to help local neighbourhoods.

Colleen Eccles, Sanctuary’s Head of Place Shaping spearheads the MORE! campaign and added: “We are delighted that we have been able to support the improvements at the memorial hall. It is a beautiful building which has stood the test of time. The improvements our contractor have been able to make will mean it is well equipped for local groups and members of the community to meet. At the heart of our MORE! scheme is the commitment to help communities where we work!”

Sanctuary Homes are currently creating Penny Fields, a brand new collection of two, three and four bedroom homes available for sale in the village of Frating, including affordable homes via shared ownership and Help to Buy schemes.
